Editorial Standards & Ethics Policy

PhotoSlammersMedia

Effective Date: April 2026  |  Last Revised: April 2026

1. Mission & Purpose

PhotoSlammersMedia is an independent sports photography and event media outlet dedicated to authentic, credential-grade visual coverage of live sporting events, professional wrestling, and community athletics. We exist to document competition honestly, serve the communities we cover, and produce work that meets the highest standards of visual journalism.

These editorial standards exist to ensure credibility, accountability, and trust with our audiences, the subjects we photograph, event organizers who grant us access, and the credentialing bodies that recognize us as legitimate media.

Credibility is the single most valuable asset this outlet possesses. Every photograph we publish, every caption we write, and every interaction we have in the field either strengthens or undermines that credibility. These standards are designed to protect it.

2. Editorial Independence

Our editorial decisions belong to us — full stop. All editorial and visual coverage decisions are made independently, free from influence by advertisers, sponsors, event promoters, teams, athletes, or any outside party.

  • No coverage is granted, withheld, or shaped in exchange for access, credentials, compensation, or favors.
  • If sponsored or promotional content ever appears on the platform, it will be clearly and conspicuously labeled as such, and it will be visually distinct from editorial content. There will be no ambiguity.
  • Editorial staff do not produce sponsored content without explicit disclosure to the audience.
  • No outside party has the right to review, approve, or alter our editorial content before publication.

3. Accuracy & Truthfulness

All published content — photographs, captions, written coverage, and metadata — must be accurate, truthful, and verifiable. We do not guess. We do not assume. We confirm.

  • Facts, names, event details, scores, and identifications must be confirmed before publication.
  • When errors are discovered, they are corrected promptly and transparently. See the Corrections & Accountability section below for our full corrections policy.
  • Photographs must faithfully represent what occurred. Staging, re-enacting, or directing subjects to fabricate moments is prohibited.
  • We do not publish rumors, unverified claims, or speculation as fact.

4. Visual Editing Standards

This is the backbone of our credibility as a photojournalism outlet. Our visual editing standards are aligned with the practices of the Associated Press (AP) and the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). The guiding principle is simple: The content of a photograph must not be altered. Our images must always tell the truth.

Permitted Adjustments

The following post-processing adjustments are acceptable, provided they are limited to what is minimally necessary for clear and accurate reproduction of the scene as it appeared:

  • Cropping for composition and relevance
  • Exposure correction, including dodging and burning
  • White balance and color correction to match the scene as observed
  • Conversion to black-and-white or grayscale
  • Normal toning and contrast adjustments
  • Noise reduction
  • Lens correction (distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting)
  • Sharpening for output

Prohibited Manipulations

The following are strictly prohibited in any editorial image published under the PhotoSlammersMedia name:

  • Adding, removing, or relocating any element within a photograph
  • Digitally blurring, eliminating, or altering backgrounds
  • Compositing multiple images into a single frame
  • Using generative AI fill, content-aware removal, or any tool that fabricates or removes visual content
  • Obscuring or altering the identity of any subject — unless required by law or for subject safety, in which case it must be disclosed in the caption
  • Removing red-eye
  • Any color or density change that substantially alters the original scene as it appeared to the photographer

Sensor Dust & Scan Artifacts

Removal of dust spots caused by sensor contamination, or scratches and blemishes on scanned negatives and prints, is acceptable. These are equipment artifacts, not content.

Third-Party & Altered Images

If a published image has been provided by a third party and was altered prior to receipt (e.g., faces obscured by the source organization), this must be disclosed in the caption with a clear description of the alteration and its source.

AI-Generated Imagery

AI-generated or AI-composited images are never published as editorial photography. Period. If AI-generated visuals are ever used for illustrative, design, or promotional purposes outside of editorial coverage, they must be clearly and conspicuously labeled as AI-generated.

5. Captioning Standards

Every published photograph must include an accurate, descriptive caption. Captions are not an afterthought — they are an integral part of the editorial product.

  • Required identification: The event name, date, location, and — when reasonably identifiable — the subjects depicted and the relevant action.
  • Captions must not editorialize, speculate, or misrepresent what is shown in the image.
  • When a subject cannot be identified, the caption should describe the action honestly without fabricating an identity. "An unidentified wrestler" is always preferable to a wrong name.
  • Technical or contextual notes must be included when applicable — for example: "Image provided by [source]," "Portrait taken in studio setting," or "Image has been converted to black-and-white."
  • Metadata (IPTC/EXIF fields) should be completed accurately and consistently for all published images, including photographer credit, copyright notice, event details, and keywords.

6. Sourcing & Attribution

Proper attribution is non-negotiable. We credit the work of others because that is what professionals do — and because we expect the same from anyone who uses our work.

  • All images published under the PhotoSlammersMedia name must be original work by staff or credentialed contributors, unless otherwise attributed.
  • Third-party images, handout photos, screenshots, or wire service images must be clearly credited with the source and any applicable usage terms noted.
  • User-submitted or crowd-sourced images are verified for authenticity before publication and are always credited to the submitter.
  • Information used in written coverage must come from reliable, verifiable sources. Anonymous sourcing is used only when necessary to protect the source and must be approved by the editor.
  • PhotoSlammersMedia does not pay sources or subjects for information, access, or participation in editorial coverage.

7. Contributor Standards & Conduct

Every person who works under the PhotoSlammersMedia name — staff or freelance — represents this outlet. There are no exceptions to these expectations.

  • All contributors are expected to uphold these editorial standards in full, without qualification.
  • Contributors must represent themselves accurately as PhotoSlammersMedia personnel when working under the outlet's credential. Misrepresenting your role, affiliation, or level of authority is prohibited.
  • Professional conduct is required at all times when representing the outlet — at events, in press areas, and in all interactions with athletes, officials, promoters, event staff, fans, and fellow media members.
  • Harassment, intimidation, or disrespectful behavior toward any person — whether a subject, colleague, event staff member, or competitor — is grounds for immediate removal from the PhotoSlammersMedia roster.
  • Contributors must not intentionally interfere with or sabotage the work of other journalists or photographers. We compete through the quality of our work, not by undermining others.
  • Contributors are responsible for the security and proper handling of any credentials, passes, or access provided through PhotoSlammersMedia.
  • Work product created under a PhotoSlammersMedia credential is subject to the outlet's usage and licensing terms as outlined in the contributor agreement.

8. Conflict of Interest Policy

Independence requires vigilance. Contributors must avoid any activity, relationship, or financial interest that could compromise — or appear to compromise — editorial independence or objectivity.

  • Contributors must not accept gifts, favors, free merchandise, complimentary travel, or compensation from teams, athletes, promoters, sponsors, or any party that could be perceived as influencing coverage.
  • Acceptable: Complimentary media credentials and standard press amenities (press box seating, media meals, parking) provided by event organizers in the normal course of media operations. These do not constitute a conflict of interest.
  • Any potential conflict of interest — including personal relationships with subjects, financial interests in teams or events, or outside employment in the sports industry — must be disclosed to the editor before covering the relevant event or subject.
  • When a conflict is identified, the editor will reassign coverage or ensure appropriate disclosure accompanies the published work.

9. Privacy, Dignity & Sensitivity

We photograph real people in real moments. That carries a responsibility that goes beyond technical skill.

  • All subjects are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of the competitive outcome or circumstances of the moment.
  • Special sensitivity is exercised when photographing minors, injury situations, vulnerable individuals, or moments of personal grief.
  • Images of minors in public sporting events are generally permissible, but extra care is taken to avoid images that could embarrass, exploit, or endanger a young athlete.
  • Private moments of grief are not intruded upon unless there is an overriding editorial justification — and even then, restraint and empathy guide the decision.
  • Requests from subjects or families to remove specific images are taken seriously and evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the editor. We listen before we decide.

10. Corrections & Accountability

Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is what you do next. PhotoSlammersMedia corrects errors promptly, transparently, and without reservation.

  • When a factual error is discovered in a caption, article, or identification, a correction is issued and clearly noted within the published content.
  • Corrections include a description of what was changed and when the correction was made.
  • Significant errors trigger an internal review of process and sourcing to prevent recurrence.
  • If an image is found to have been improperly edited or manipulated in violation of these standards, it is immediately removed from publication and a public notice is posted explaining the action taken.
  • Readers, subjects, and event organizers are encouraged to report errors or concerns by contacting the editor directly.

11. Credential & Access Responsibilities

Media credentials obtained through PhotoSlammersMedia are a professional trust — not an entitlement, not a perk, and not a free ticket.

  • Credentials are used solely for editorial coverage purposes. Using credentials for personal access, fan activity, autograph seeking, or any non-editorial purpose is prohibited and is grounds for immediate revocation.
  • Contributors must comply with all venue rules, credential terms, and access restrictions set by event organizers.
  • Credential misuse by any contributor may result in permanent removal from the PhotoSlammersMedia roster and notification to the credentialing organization.
  • Every credential we hold was earned through the quality and professionalism of our work. Every contributor is expected to protect that reputation.

12. Social Media & Public Representation

Your personal accounts are your own — but when your posts reference PhotoSlammersMedia coverage or events you covered under our credential, you are representing this outlet whether you intend to or not.

  • When contributors post content or commentary on personal social media accounts that references PhotoSlammersMedia coverage or events covered under the outlet's credential, they should conduct themselves professionally and consistently with these standards.
  • Contributors should not post unedited outtakes, behind-the-scenes content from restricted areas, or embargoed material without editorial approval from the editor.
  • Personal opinions expressed on social media should be clearly distinguishable from PhotoSlammersMedia editorial positions.

13. Enforcement & Acknowledgment

These standards are not suggestions. They are the terms under which you work with PhotoSlammersMedia.

  • Violations of these standards may result in disciplinary action, including removal of contributor privileges, revocation of credentials, and termination of the contributor relationship.
  • All contributors are required to read, acknowledge, and agree to these standards before their first assignment under the PhotoSlammersMedia credential.
  • These standards are reviewed and updated periodically. Contributors will be notified of material changes and may be required to re-acknowledge updated versions.

These standards reflect our commitment to honest, ethical, and professional visual journalism. They are the foundation of the trust our audience, subjects, and credentialing partners place in PhotoSlammersMedia.

Questions or concerns regarding these standards should be directed to the Editor at [email protected].
